Formerly known as Portree, and for a few years in the 17th century known at Port
Montgomery, this former fishing village became important due to its command of the
shortest sea-route from Ireland to Britain. Slight damage to foot of front cover due
to removal of label, corners dogeared, but at least the contents are clean. On

frontis, 56 other ills, many of them photos. Scotland's most distinctive province,
according to my gazetteer, consists of the old counties of Wigtown and Kirkcudbright. VG
